Touring Tainan

Shennong St.

Shennong St. is known to locals as "Beishi Street" and is the most well preserved old street in Tainan City. In the past, the street was thronged with merchants. Today, it is an art street steeped in traditional culture. At the alley entrance is the Yongchuang Sedan Workshop, where traditional craft continues to be practiced. Inside the alley is an art & culture exhibition space for youths. Though times have changed, the old street has now discovered a new life.

Confucius Temple of Tainan

The Confucius Temple of Tainan was built during the Yongli Era of the Ming Dynasty. It was the earliest scholar's temple in Taiwan and the top government-run school before the late Qing Dynasty. This is why it is also known as the "First School of Taiwan". There are many cultural artifacts in the temple, and this gracious building is now listed as a Class 1 national historic monument. Dacheng Hall forms the main body of the temple and is dedicated to Confucius himself. Many imperial plaques are hung within the hall. There are several taboos when visiting the Confucius Temple. Though it is referred to as a temple, no incense sticks are burnt here. There are no door gods on the doors of the Confucius Temple as well because the master once said: “I do not believe in the supernatural.” Please observe these two points.
